History of
reality tv
The hidden camera show, Candid Camera, often
identified as the first reality TV show, premiered on the ABC network in 1948
with the title Candid Microphone, reflecting the show's roots as a radio
program (various versions of the TV show aired from 1948 to 2014).
Reality became most prominent in the early 2000s with the
success of the series survivor, idols and big brother, all of which
became global franchises. Reality TV shows have developed from shows
like survivor to things like love island, making the whole genre more popular as approximately
four in ten people watch reality shows to some extent.
